Australia adopted a broad-based goods and services tax (GST) from 1 July 2000. The rate is set at 10%.
All businesses must be registered for GST unless they are very small or exempt.
When a business sells goods or services, GST is added to the price. GST paid on all inputs to the business are available to the business as a reduction in the net GST before being remitted to the Australian Tax Office.
